The Murphy’s have always believed in safety, fun, and going one step above to be your best. Bryan and Theresa Murphy are native Texans and had moved to Colorado for 12 years. While living in the mountains, Makenzie (their daughter), wanted to try something new, after all, The Hunger Games was growing in popularity and Colorado had the Olympic Training Center. Put two and two together and Makenzie picked up a sport that eventually would get the whole family involved more than they ever could imagine.
We went to her first intro class with her Coach Kevin Lewis from Quick Draw Archery. The concentration and excitement on her face was priceless. Kevin said she had a natural talent and it was evident in her shooting. We were sold, three to four days a week and competitions on the weekend. We then found ourselves driving up and down the mountains, in the snow, what seemed like 8 months out of the year. Bryan, being an avid hunter, couldn't just sit on the sidelines and watch her shoot arrow after arrow. He began to train with Kevin learning the in's and out's of target archery. Coaching was always a responsibility Bryan took seriously. His passion for Makenzie's own success as well as others, would soon be put to the test. But wait, high school was quickly approaching and those from Texas know, Friday night lights, food and family are very important. We missed home!
In August 2017, the Murphy’s moved home to Decatur, Texas. As Makenzie entered her Freshman year we promised her there was plenty of football (which was seriously lacking in Park County, Colorado) and continued archery. We scored high with the size of her school, a lot of new friends and awesome football. However, Decatur High School did not have an archery program. Having Makenzie’s success in USA Archery and Junior Olympic Archery Development, we prayed about it and soon realized God had plans. WHAT IF???
What if we could marry two programs together and teach a round robin of curriculum that would fit most, if not all archers? We approached the Decatur Independent School District and asked if they would sponsor our program as long as we funded the program. The School Board agreed and in April of 2018, Decatur Eagles Archery was formed to include a handful of students. By September of 2018, we had 50 regular students and they were from all over Wise County and the surrounding areas. Then came the big "C" word....CHANGE!!!
Why the change? HEAT! We were practicing at the Wise County Fairgrounds from two nights a week to three times a week. A big metal barn and no air conditioning was tough on that aging Coach of ours. Truth was, our students were grouping their arrows so close together they were either hitting their own arrow or others. Coach – I need a new arrow, Coach – I broke a nock, Coach I need a new bow… The hunt was on… How and where can we find a large building with air conditioning? How can we pull it off? How in the world are we going to run an archery shop and coach archers at the same time?
Having roots in Decatur, we just knew the opportunity was there. There was a need for an archery shop (there had been one in town in the past) and a retail center to not only serve our students and their families and friends, but to serve all of the archers in Wise County and beyond. We opened our doors in Decatur the month of October, 2018. Business was great and we were cruising right along. Little did we know our lives were about to change!
Like many businesses, 2020 began with COVID. We had spent the better portion of 2019 looking for a permanent home and now this! We kept our faith and with our good friend Shelly Holleman by our side, we partnered together to find a permanent home for NIAC and her thriving business, Beyond the Bluff (All natural and holistic wellness products.) With Shelly by our side, the entire feel of NIAC changed, and changed for the better.
We are now blessed in our current location, 2502 County Road 4421, Rhome, Texas 76078. 16,000 sq. feet of always expanding space that is used for retail, 10 indoor yard range, 20 yard range, outdoor static range and 3D animal range.
We hope that you will enjoy this adventure with us and make us all better archers. Let’s all go straight for the ‘x’.
